Why an arts high school?
ChiArts will satisfy the strong need for a diverse, public arts high school open to all Chicago residents who qualify, providing superior arts training coupled with a top-notch academic program.
What neighborhood does ChiArts serve?
ChiArts recruits students from all neighborhoods across Chicago.
Where is ChiArts located?
The Chicago High School for the Arts is located at 3200 S. Calumet. The school will share the Douglas school building with Pershing West Middle School for two years, after which time it will move to larger quarters.
Are students who have not had extensive arts training able to apply to ChiArts for admission? Or does ChiArts serve and challenge students who have had extensive arts training?
Students with potential or undeveloped talent are encouraged to apply, as well as students who are currently at an advanced level. Training will be available for all levels of ability.
How many students will attend ChiArts?
By 2012, school enrollment is expected to reach its full capacity of 600 students.
Does the academic program offer varied level courses?
Yes, ChiArts will offer courses with a range of levels in order to best challenge and prepare our students for college.
Will ChiArts have a program for ESL students?
Yes, there will be a program to serve our ESL students.
What is the timeline for the application and audition process?
Applications will be available and accepted from early October through December 18, 2009. Students accepted to audition will be notified in early January. Auditions will be held in January and February.
Who teaches at ChiArts?
The faculty consists of full-time certified academic teachers, artist-teachers, and part-time artist-teachers of local, national, and international acclaim.
What kind of response is the school receiving?
Numerous community arts programs, professional arts organizations and institutions of higher learning that specialize in the arts have come forward to join with ChiArts in making this type of educational experience available to Chicago residents through the public school system.
